I suspect their are numerous Catholics in both house and senate. But, even if your point is true, then there are more liberal protestants in Congress than there are conservative protestants (since the dems have a majority). So following your logic, religious dogma isn't necessarily a conservative thing - could be one of liberalism as well.

And a lot of those politicians who profess Christianity simply use it as a tag to get a vote. They use church membership or affiliation as their link to Christianity. Sadly, many on church rolls are simply not Christian at all in any sense of the word. Why do you think "hypocite" has become such a popular term? ...and yet churches I've went to or other churches I've heard take a stance, even when this motive is transparent, still vouch for that politician and tell it's followers to vote for him/her. Corruption at every level. Some churches get sold a bill of goods and take it gladly in the name of supporting their fellow Christian who's gonna straighten out those darn liberals! And then get left holding the bag when at best--that politician does nothing to further any religiously based goals, or at worst--gets caught doing something completely immoral.

I made that same point months ago, but it was viewed as me bashing Republicans & Religion at the time. AND--it's the reason why I don't take a person's word for what religion they are when I'm deciding to vote, and really--why I've taken a lot of any beliefs I've got regarding my soul and relationship w/God out of the equation and go strictly off the real-world issues now.

My pastor has a definite stand on politics. "Get out and vote. Research each candidate's position and vote according to your convictions." To side with one candidate or another would be risky for a pastor of most churches, seeing that the congregations of each are so diverse, politically speaking.

But most pastors I've ever heard of taking an actual political stance have said that they're supporting so-and-so because they're Republicans and they have the moral upper-hand.

I do respect your pastor for having that view--most I've heard will just go ahead and rely on that religious-right misconception and tell people to vote Republican because it's God's will.

Make no mistake about it, he is definitely conservative himself and admits to being a Republican. As I've found with a lot of folks, he's from a long line of Democrats who left the party over moral issues.
